Randy Archibold announces a new hire as deputy Sports editor, and the desk welcomes Alan Blinder from National.

I am very happy to announce that Oskar Garcia of The Associated Press will be joining us later this month as a deputy Sports editor.

Oskar, deputy sports editor for storytelling at The A.P., who is based in Philadelphia, will bring to our daily report a smart, sharp eye for news and a rich, varied background in reporting and storytelling. His 13 years at The A.P. have included a turn covering the gambling industry from Las Vegas (his subjects included Floyd Mayweather’s tax issues, the downfall of online poker and, of course, calling in a tip on Paris Hilton). He also covered immigration from a heartland perch in Nebraska. And for two years he had what sounds like an enviable job, news editor in the Honolulu bureau.

Oskar has been a part of A.P. teams covering the Sochi and Rio Olympics, and has led its college basketball coverage. He has used his experience covering gambling to develop a sports betting team (covering it, not indulging in it).

Somehow, he also found time to serve on The A.P.’s stylebook committee (let the debate over “%” versus “percent” rage on without him) and has been on a team of editors calling races in national elections.

“I’m mainly looking forward to getting to know the sports staff and everyone else who makes this a special place to be in journalism,’’ he said. “It feels like I’m a beat reporter getting started on a new beat and that learning to get up to speed is going to be very fun.”

And as some of you have heard, Alan Blinder, a domestic correspondent, will be joining Sports this summer. Randy and Matt Futterman write:

For a long time, colleagues who know of Alan Blinder’s love of sports, zest for news and grace under pressure have whispered to us that we should really try to get him.

We are pleased to announce that has now happened. Alan is joining us as a college sports reporter in July.

Alan completes a whirlwind run on National, covering natural disasters, mass shootings, political and civil upheavals …  and Marriott points loyalists. Alan will remain based in Atlanta, the eye of a sports hurricane fed by Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, L.S.U., Florida and other regional newsmakers. But Alan will roam near and far, capturing the vibrancy of college sports, its passions and personalities, while digging into its news-generating dark corners.

“We’ll miss Alan tremendously but we on National understand the logic of this move,” said Marc Lacey, the National editor. “The only thing that Alan is more passionate about than a good hurricane may well be a good college football game.”

He was part of the team that won a Polk award this year for reporting about social media deception — and looks forward to unpacking “huge, enduring and totally fair questions about the intersection of cash and college athletics. We know that corruption infects college sports, and we know that there are stories starring extraordinary athletes, coaches and fans that can show us how people view economics, education, gender and race.”
